There are the higher-ups of the main ship that the Robinsons butt heads with. The robot in Lost in Space was IMO not only the best thing about the show, but one of the great robotic creations of TV history. Smith, the ever-present threat as she alternates between trying to worm her way into the Robinson family while simultaneously betraying them at every turn. There are more actual villains by the time the show reaches season 2, which I recommend sticking with because I believe it’s a lot better than the first season. Granted, Lost in Space is way, way lighter on the actual science than The Martian was, but it comes up with some pretty innovative scenarios the family must wriggle their way out of.
Lost in Space reminds me quite a bit of The Martian in many ways, where the main enemy was not another character, but the bleak realities of survival on a foreign planet or in space.
